Final Post For Class

Just a note (in case anyone reads it).

The MLA Class was AWESOME

I have had more fun learning about all the web 2.0 sites/applications/etc. than I have had in learning anything before. Unfortunately, I fell behind and had to do some major catching up (and then realized I hadn't posted my work.... ho hum).

I am definitely going to go back through all the exercises again and hopefully have my husband tagalong for the ride ~ this is so neat!

Thank you very much for providing the opportunity to learn more about these resources. At least in the future I will have some clue what's being discussed when someone mentions a mashup or facebook or any one of the other points we've covered! Thanks a Bunch!!!!!

Assignment - Week 8

Exercise 1 : Mashups
I have never heard of mashups before this. Kind of a cool concept.
I found one called Typeracer (http://mashupawards.com/typeracer/)~ you are timed while you type text from various books, etc. You can even race-type against an internet opponent. (I can't wait to type against the nephews!)
I am overwhelmed at the number of great sites I've found ~ from realestate to foods to games ~ awesome.

Exercise 2: Rollyo
Took a bit to figure this one out.
I love the legal signs ~~ very funny.
I really like the "we'll come to you" idea based on IM messaging ~ very current and useful in any library setting.
Also, the ALA privacy toolkit ~ great information
There was a curious note about Johnson County patron privacy ~ librarian could actually be fired for giving a patron phone number to the police ~ wonder what our policies are...
I don't like Rollyo as much as some of the other resources presented ~ the search results remind me of a generic google search.

Alaska by Dawn (vacation anyone?)

Assignment - Week 7

Thank you sooo much for guiding to the podcast lists! I have been looking for some podcasts on a particular topic for quite a while and now I have found a couple!

I like YouTube ~ I can see a lot of use for it in the library as well as in the medical school setting. I think it would be great for class settings where you could post your content or a specific topic out of your content and have the class be able to view it at their leisure and comment on it. The video quality could be better, but for many applications, it would be good enough (okay, not for brain surgery ~ but for locating library items I'm sure it would do). It would also give a forum for the viewers to let you know where you were "right on" or where you "missed the mark" in guiding them to the information they wanted (feedback for future sequels).

Definitely NOT fluff! With all the younger crowd flocking to social networking sites, YouTube and the like, I'm SO glad MLA put this class together to help those of us who are (without knowing it) behind the times ~ my pre-teen nephews know more about this than I do ~ but I'm catching up!!!

Assignment - Week 6

I love sharing photos!!!
I can't wait to upload all my recent wedding photos for the family to see ~ I think that's going to be awesome ~ especially for those who couldn't make it due to a storm.

I see this as a nice option for the library~ we have various artists showcased throughout the year and it would be a good place to put a caption about them or their displays. It might also be nice to have a staff listing that matches faces to names ~ and at the click of a mouse, too !

Cool!

Assignment - Week 5

WOW!
If this isn't the future of software, it's close! I can see this as a valid substitute on so many levels (in a pinch, of course). To be able to instantly collaborate with anyone and give or get feedback ~ that's a gem! I may use this in my PPT classes ~ a great way for my students to be able to get feedback and/or assistance!
This may be my favorite session yet!

Assignment - Week 4

del.icio.us

This one was a bit interesting. Seems like a good way to make sure you have your "favorites" available no matter where you are. Also would be useful when you want to share your resources with someone else. I can also see where the lists could get to be so long as to no longer be useful.

Assignment - Week 3

Exercise 1:
Created Facebook Account. Added some friends -- even found a highschool friend (wow!)
Added MLA Annual event to my events. Added UAB App, PubMed & WorldCat.
I can see facebook as being an awesome focal point to get my old high school class back together!!

Exercise 2:
I already have a linkedin account. I have several friends in my circle. :)

Exercise 3:
My space. Good concept.

Social networking seems a good way to get more folks interested and "talking" about the current topics. I'm not sure if our library would succeed with a Facebook or MySpace page ~ to some extent, our campus prohibits social networking sites ~ if we were able to get it going, i think it would be GREAT for staff and students to discuss and get to know each other (and get to know what we can do for them!). Privacy and social networking would seem to be a very key point. There is so much in the news about children and adults using the sites for negative influence. I think folks would have to be very guarded about what they choose to share on the sites. I found facebook to be quite interesting, mostly because I found a past friend with whom I haven't had contact in over 15 years~~ and would never have even thought of trying to connect with had they not popped up on the schools listing! :) thanks!

Assignment - Week 2

Step 1: Explored other school's wiki's ~ neat concept. In our arrangement, it would be nice to arrange a wiki for class/assignment updates.

Step 2: Joined Class Wiki as dpsbears

Step 3: Created Wiki for ILL Tricks (http://illtricks.wetpaint.com/)

Step 4: Added links to Wiki & Blog, contributed to class page.

Step 5: Contributed to the states link on the class wiki

Step 6: Added the class Blog and Wiki links to my own blog :)

I can see where blogs & wikis can be very useful in the library setting! I think a wiki for tips in the various library world sections would be helpful to all (ex: ILL !).

Assignment - Week 1

Step 1: My blog is:

Step 2: I have set up Yahoo to accept several RSS feeds

Step 3: RSS feeds include a Clinical Trials search, the local hockey team feed (go Bugs!), a PubMed Search, an online journal contents update, and two ILL specific feeds.

Step 4: I think RSS feeds could greatly benefit our library ~ from staff to patrons. I can see it as a tool for staff to springboard thoughts & ideas, as well as problems and solutions between offices (with a nice way of keeping track of the dialogue). Patrons could use it similarly as well as use it as a place to post comments/thoughts/ideas for library improvement, praise, etc.

PS... This is WAY cool!
